If you’ve been on facebook or social media lately, you probably don’t have to scroll too far to see somebody talking about the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet has seen an explosion in recent years, and for good reason! Today we’re going to discuss some of the TOP HEALTH BENEFITS of a ketogenic diet.
I think it’s important to lay the foundation of a ketogenic diet. And frankly, I personally don’t like the word “diet”. I believe ketogenic to be more of a lifestyle! It’s a way of life! Higher fat / moderate protein / lower carbohydrates. Diet to me seems short term. Something you do to lose some weight. The ketogenic lifestyle goes beyond that…as you’ll soon see…
Let’s keep things simple. In the absence of carbohydrates & glucose your body burns FAT for fuel! This is essentially the core concept of the ketogenic lifestyle! The goal is to SHIFT your body into a state of ketosis or FAT BURNING so you can reap the associated health benefits!
Let’s Dig Into Some of the TOP HEALTH BENEFITS of a Ketogenic Lifestyle:
1. Weight Loss
Let’s face it. The standard American diet (SAD) is extremely processed, toxic, and pro-inflammatory! A LOT of refined sugars and carbohydrates! Currently 71% of the U.S. is either overweight or obese! We are not going in the right direction! In my opinion the TOP benefit of a ketogenic lifestyle is the weight loss. Why? Because weight gain / weight challenges LEAD to so many other chronic debilitating conditions (diabetes, heart disease, cancer etc.)
Again, the science is simple! By consuming higher fat / moderate protein / low carb your body uses the excess fat as its primary fuel source. Fat is actually the “preferred” fuel source of the body. It’s a slower burning / “cleaner” fuel!
We were fed a lie in the 1980’s! We were led to believe that FAT made you FAT! This could not be further from the truth! It’s the excess carbs / sugar that makes us fat!
2. Reduced Inflammation
The ketogenic lifestyle has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties as well. The not only helps with local joint pain / muscle pain / muscle aches etc…but has an overall “systemic” anti-inflammatory effect as well.
Remember, MOST of the chronic health conditions that people are suffering from today have an underlying INFLAMMATORY component! Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimers etc…these ALL have inflammation as the primary ROOT CAUSE!
3. Increased Energy
Anybody who follows the standard American diet understands the dips / spikes / dips associated with it! Because most people rely on carbs / glucose for fuel…it provides the quick surge we’re seeking…but it’s followed by a CRASH!
Most Americans are on the “roller coaster” of spikes and dips. 2pm rolls around and people are reaching for another cup of coffee for caffeine. Or maybe it’s a soda for a quick sugar surge to get them through the day. Sound familiar?
These habits / choices over time can be detrimental to a persons health. We become insulin resistant. We become weight loss resistant. Inflammation spirals out of control and the next thing you know you’re searching for answers to your health challenges!
4. Brain Function
Another benefit of the ketogenic lifestyle is brain function. People RAVE about how mental clarity improves while on the ketogenic diet. Memory recall improves. Improved learning etc. Anyone who has experienced a state of ketosis will be able to tell you first hand the beneficial effects of their cognitive function.
5. Cardiovascular Disease & Metabolic Syndrome
Remember, fat doesn’t make you fat. Carbs do. Also, by eating a diet rich in fat and void of sugar and carbohydrates can enhance your chances of reversing cardiovascular disease symptoms. Shifting into a state of ketosis helps to IMPROVE your cardio biomarkers (blood sugar levels, HDL, LDL, insulin, CRP etc.)
6. Improved Digestive Function
Many people suffer from IBS (diarrhea, constipation, bloating, discomfort etc.) and most would think that eating a higher fat, low carb diet would make matters worse. Numerous studies have actually found that lowering sugar consumption can help with IBS type symptoms and that the ketogenic lifestyle provides adequate relief and improves bloating, pain, and helps the quality of life in people suffering with IBS / digestive challenges.
Migraines are a tricky thing for many Americans. The root cause can be tough to solve, however, people have reported great results when shifting from a typical high carb diet to a low carb / ketogenic diet. There have been several studies that have shown the beneficial relationship between ketosis and migraine treatment.
Ketosis is a form of cancer treatment (and prevention) is rapidly growing in popularity. Why? Because so many cancer patients are reporting HUGE benefits when following a ketogenic diet. Many cancer cells can only survive with glucose as a fuel source. The science shows that sugar FEEDS cancer. Once again, in the absence of sugar / glucose…amazing things happen!
If you think this all sounds too good to be true, you may want to consider reviewing this paper.
Epilepsy is where the ketogenic diet has its foundation. Back in 1924 they developed ketogenic protocols to help kids with epilepsy. For nearly 100 years research has been being done to show how ketosis can help treat drug resistant epilepsy. The interesting thing is that epileptic children remain seizure free long after their ketogenic treatments had stopped.
Autism is a growing epidemic for so many people. Currently 1 in 68 kids have an autism spectrum disorder. A quick google search of autism and ketosis will bring up hundreds of articles where people share their stories of improving autism with a ketogenic diet. This is because it appears that ketosis is extremely effective for dealing with autism.
One study was done on 30 Autistic children using the ketogenic diet – with 30% of MCT oil – and was administered for 6 months. The children with the milder autistic behaviors showed the most improvement, while the rest displayed mild to moderate improvements.
As you can see, the ketogenic lifestyle has far reaching benefits that span beyond the arena of weight loss / fat loss. Doctors all across the U.S. are implementing ketogenic protocols into their clinics for the treatment of various conditions.
There are so many other conditions we didn’t even touch on…
- Multiple Sclerosis & other autoimmune conditions
- High cholesterol levels
- Skin problems
The list goes on and on and there is a ton of evidence to prove that the ketogenic lifestyle can dramatically impact a person’s health for the better!
